The Medical Research Council improves human health through world-class medical research. They fund research across the biomedical spectrum, from fundamental lab-based science to clinical trials, and in all major disease areas. They are a non-departmental public body funded through the government’s science and research budget and invest in research on behalf of the UK tax payer. Scientists apply for funding for their research and applications are reviewed by panels of independent experts.
National Institute for Health Research: NIHR
The NIHR commission and fund NHS, social care and public health research and clinical trials to develop the evidence to support decision making by professionals, policy makers, patients and carers. Their aim is to improve the health and wealth of the nation through research and to provide a health research system in which the NHS supports outstanding individuals working in world-class facilities, conducting leading-edge research focused on the needs of patients and the public.
Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council
The Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council are one of seven Research Councils that work together as Research Councils UK (RCUK). They are funded by the Government’s Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS). Their aim is to promote and support, high-quality basic, strategic and applied research and related postgraduate training relating to the understanding and exploitation of biological systems.
The Royal Society provides a range of grant schemes to support the UK scientific community and foster collaboration between UK based and overseas scientists. The Society aims to accommodate flexible working arrangements with its grant schemes. Their fellowships allow for part-time working, sabbaticals and secondments and there is also provision for maternity, paternity, adoptive or extended sick leave (other care-related leave is also considered).
CRUK are the largest fundraising medical research charity in the world. Their funding covers a wide range of activity, from basic research to late phase clinical trials which includes drug discovery, basic cell biology, clinical trials, public health, biomarker research and much more.
