The personal safety of all employees is of the utmost importance to the University.
Lone working: please check with your department for its policy on lone working as dependent on your working environment there may be specific protocols that you need to follow in line with departmental health and safety policies.
Office Working:
If you are working within your office outside of the normal ‘full staffed’ hours, ensure that the custodians, security team or any other present colleagues know where you are and vice versa so you have an idea of who is available should you need any assistance.
It is a good idea to let reception or security know when you are going home and if anyone is left in the building. If possible you should let someone at home know when to expect you back if you are working later than normal.
When leaving work or visiting a new building, make sure you know the protocols for accessing and exiting the building, especially if you are staying after normal staffing hours.
Some buildings use a sign in and sign out system so if you are visiting a new building ensure you sign in so that the resident custodians know when have left.
Lab Working:
If you work within a laboratory environment or environment with hazards, do not be afraid to speak to your manager or colleagues if you feel there is any danger to personal safety. Ensure that all health and safety procedures are undertaken as per your training for your working environment and alert a supervisor immediately if there are any concerns no matter how small.
Personal safety around the city:
If you find yourself in an emergency call 999 to contact the police, ambulance or fire rescue service. For non-emergencies you can call 111.
