Clinical Lecturers (CL)
- Established post
- 4 year contract as standard*
- Either locally funded or funded by NIHR
- Typically a 50:50 time split between specialist clinical training and research.
- Majority of Clinical Lecturer positions are aimed at Junior Doctors with a PhD/MD (or equivalent), who already have speciality training experience
- Hold an Honorary Clinical Contract with NHS Trust/body

Clinical Research Associates (CRA)
- Unestablished research post
- Contract for any length of time
- Hold an Honorary Clinical Contract with NHS Trust/body.
Clinical Research Fellows (CRF)
- Unestablished research post
- Linked to a personal fellowship
- Contract length in line with fellowship
- Hold an Honorary Clinical Contract with NHS Trust/body.
From 1 October 2019, Junior Doctors receive joint (co-terminous) employment contracts which state:
This is an integrated appointment between the University and [relevant NHS Trust] (“NHS Trust”). You will therefore also be issued with an Honorary Clinical Contract by the NHS Trust. You should be aware that if your contract with the NHS Trust is terminated your employment with the University will be terminated, and vice versa.
