Conference goals
The School’s first EDI and Culture conference is an opportunity for protected time to discuss matters related to EDI and culture, including research culture. The conference programme will include a mixture of talks, discussion panels, interactive sessions, oral and poster presentations and rapid ‘lightning talks’. We will share best practice and discuss barriers, challenges and their solutions. There will also be time to network with people from across the School, the Biomedical Campus and the wider University and find out about their experiences in this area.
The motto of the Conference and the School’s general approach is that “EDI is everyone’s business”, so please come and be part of it and have your say!
Conference themes and intended participants
The EDI & Culture Conference has three themes:
- Theme 1: EDI in context: the bigger picture and the local landscape
- Theme 2: Research culture – What is it? How do we engage?
- Theme 3: Innovative practice and tackling challenges
The Conference will cover aspects of EDI in education, research culture and wider workplace culture and should be of interest to all Clinical School staff and students regardless of field of study, work or job type.
All are welcome to attend regardless of what group you belong to – researchers, academics, professional services staff, technical and operational staff, students, apprentices, and other colleagues on any type of contract.

Conference Organisers
On behalf of the Clinical School, Professor Nita Forouhi, Director of Organisational Affairs, and Professor Patrick Maxwell, Regius Professor of Physic and Head of the School of Clinical Medicine, warmly invite you to our inaugural Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) and Culture Conference.
This event is organised by the Director of Organisational Affairs together with the Clinical School Human Resources (HR) team, the School’s Equality Champions and the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Governance Group. We recognise the need for focused time to discuss, collaborate, and innovate in the field of EDI and workplace culture, including its impact on research culture.
The Conference Organising Committee includes: Nita Forouhi (Chair), Lisa Clare, Miguel Constancia, Harriet Dean-Edwards, Charlotte Goodwin, Tim Hearn, Graham Martin, Tolu Oni, Becky Tuck and Karen Woodey.
Together, we aim to foster a supportive environment that not only addresses the current state of EDI but also stimulates thought-provoking conversation on how we can collectively enhance the culture within our institution. We look forward to your participation in this important event.
